Step 2 โ€“ Interval Training (3 mins)

Use apps like Functional Ear Trainer (mobile) or Teoria.com (free).

  • Focus on one key at a time (C major โ†’ G major โ†’ etc.).

  • Drill: hear the note in context (Do โ†’ interval note), then identify it by ear.

  • Pro hack: sing the interval aloud before naming it.

Step 1 โ€“ Sing & Match (3 mins)

Hum or sing a random pitch โ†’ then find it on your guitar.

If you struggle, use a tuner app like TonalEnergy or GuitarTuna to confirm.

Goal: shrink the gap between โ€œwhat I hear in my headโ€ and โ€œwhere it is on the fretboard.โ€

Step 3 โ€“ Call & Response (3 mins)

Play a 2โ€“4 note lick or riff.

  • First sing it.

  • Then play it on your guitar.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Start with simple major scale notes, then move to blues scale or random riffs.
Gradually increase complexity:

  • 1-bar ideas โ†’ 2-bar melodic ideas.

Step 4 โ€“ Transcription Drill (3 mins)

Pick 10โ€“20 seconds of a song you like (start with easy pop/rock).

  1. Sing the melody line.

  2. Find it on guitar without tabs.

  3. Write it down (note names, solfege, or tab in Guitar Pro if youโ€™re comfortable).

๐ŸŽฏ Weekly Challenge (10โ€“15 mins extra, once a week)

  • Chord Detective โ†’ Strum a progression (Iโ€“Vโ€“viโ€“IV, 12-bar blues, iiโ€“Vโ€“I, etc.). Try to identify chords by ear and play along.

  • 1-String Melody โ†’ Force yourself to play a riff on only one string. No chord shapes, just pure interval hearing.

๐Ÿš€ Advanced Layer (after ~2 months)

  • Solfege solos โ†’ Sing solos with โ€œDo, Re, Miโ€ while playing.

  • Harmonic dictation โ†’ Hear the bass line and guess the chord quality.

  • TV Ad Jam โ†’ Play along instantly with TV jingles and ads by ear (fun & brutal).

๐Ÿง˜ Stick With It

If you stick to this like a monk:

  • In 6โ€“12 months, youโ€™ll pick out most melodies by ear and jam along with songs.

  • In a year, youโ€™ll be transcribing solos and chord progressions without fear.
